In an article appearing in today’s Telegraph, advisors close to President Obama were said to be “shocked and angered” by a recent speech given by General Stanley McChrystal.
“The relationship between President Barack Obama and the commander of NATO forces in Afghanistan has been put under severe strain by Gen Stanley McChrystal’s comments on strategy for the war.
According to sources close to the administration, Gen McChrystal shocked and angered presidential advisers with the bluntness of a speech given in London last week.
The next day he was summoned to an awkward 25-minute face-to-face meeting on board Air Force One on the tarmac in Copenhagen, where the president had arrived to tout Chicago’s unsuccessful Olympic bid.”
One can only assume that General McChrystal is, at this point, not likely to be found joining with the Obama Youth song and praise sessions sweeping the nation’s state-controlled gradeschools.
Whatever one might think of this exchange, we can all be thankful that The One finally managed to squeeze in some face time with the general managing what Obama himself described during the presidential campaign as a conflict where victory is vital to the national security interests of the United States. While it is clear that, from Obama’s perspective, the Afghan war situation is not as important as was the Chicago bid to host the 2016 Olympics, at least it rated 25 minutes of focus.
