Drone Wars: Because only the American State should have the power to spy on and kill innocents.

According to the American State, American citizens should be forced to register their private drones with said American State.

You know, ’cause citizens might hurt somebody with their drones…unlike the American State, which only regularly spies on and routinely kills innocent people because…well…that’s just what The State does, you know?

But citizens just can’t handle the responsibilities that come with things like drones.

Therefore, citizens can’t be trusted with things like drones

…or privacy (see: Privacy is for masters. Transparency is for slaves. Welcome to “the land of the free” and the home of the NSA.)

…or even home ownership (see: Why home ownership will never be allowed in “the land of the free” and the home of the NSA).

This is what a culture looks like when Christians disengage and surrender their responsibilities to the State.

American citizens end up “needing” (and looking to) the American State to “protect” them; to shield them from the dangers of such “extreme” things as actual privacy, actual private property, and the responsibilities that come with them.

That’s the lay o’ the State-managed societal landscape here in “the land of the free” and the home of the NSA.

Recently, and just days apart, we were treated to two important stories that should help to make this painful reality plain:

The Assassination Complex, published by The Intercept, chronicled in vivid detail the American State’s use of drones to kill people, many of whom are innocent “collateral damage”. If you haven’t read the article, you need to. If you aren’t disgusted by what “the land of the free” and the home of the NSA has become, you should be.

The Washington Post also published Federal regulators to require registration of recreational drones (in the National Security section), in which, as the title makes fairly clear, our beloved State has found yet another bit of property and activity that we need to submit for its approval and regulation, all for our own good and safety, of course.

It seems that the juxtaposition of these two stories is very helpful.

Just think of it for a sec: The American State that wants to “take care of us” by coercing us into submitting ourselves to yet another form of regulation and registration, this time regarding drones, is the very same American State that has become legendary for its ridiculously irresponsible and often “accidentally” fatal use of drones.

The Assassination Complex begins by shining some light on the dark, Orwellian ways of the American State’s approach to language (and pretty much everything else):

Drones are a tool, not a policy. The policy is assassination. While every president since Gerald Ford has upheld an executive order banning assassinations by U.S. personnel, Congress has avoided legislating the issue or even defining the word “assassination.” This has allowed proponents of the drone wars to rebrand assassinations with more palatable characterizations, such as the term du jour, “targeted killings.”

The article then goes on to share the sort of hard information that we are programmed to ignore as “good Americans”:

The White House and Pentagon boast that the targeted killing program is precise and that civilian deaths are minimal. However, documents detailing a special operations campaign in northeastern Afghanistan, Operation Haymaker, show that between January 2012 and February 2013, U.S. special operations airstrikes killed more than 200 people. Of those, only 35 were the intended targets. During one five-month period of the operation, according to the documents, nearly 90 percent of the people killed in airstrikes were not the intended targets. In Yemen and Somalia, where the U.S. has far more limited intelligence capabilities to confirm the people killed are the intended targets, the equivalent ratios may well be much worse.

Does God care about this?

Yes.

Even if most “American Christians” do not.

With these damning statistics and American State use of drones noted, let’s move on to consider a bit from the Washington Post article on how the same State is going to protect us from the dangers of drones by adding more regulation and registration (read: State power) into our lives:

Federal regulators said Monday that they will require recreational drone users to register their aircraft with the government for the first time in an attempt to track rogue flying robots that are increasingly posing a threat to aviation safety.

The decision to compel drone owners to register their aircraft represents a policy shift by the Obama administration. . .

And this is how the State grows….and grows…and grows and grows and grows, here in the “land of the free” and the home of the self-described “brave”.

It’s always for our own good.

It’s always because we believe that if the State doesn’t protect us, we will be unable to survive.

It’s always because we have been thoroughly removed from the Word of God as our basis for understanding the roles, responsibilities, and limitations of the God-ordained institutions of Family, Church, and State. (See: Statism 101: State-run “education” makes a State-dependent population.)

So we surrender our dignity, our privacy, our liberty, and our freedom…all in the name of liberty, freedom, and security as defined by the American State. In doing so, we make that State our god in practice.

Until we repent of this America State idolatry and submit to Christ as King in practice, we will only get (and deserve) much more of the same.
