Imagine, if you will, Barack Obama, Bill and Hillary Clinton (though not necessarily together – we don’t wanna be too fantastic here), John Kerry, Stuart Smalley, Joe Biden and Bill Maher all gathered ‘round the base of ol’ Mount Sinai as Moses brings down the following decree to man directly from the mind and hand of God:

“I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

You shall have no other gods before me.”

(Exodus 20:2-3)

Any thoughts as to how that one would go over?

Not well, I’m guessing.

Especially when we take the time to note the clear meaning and intention of the phrase “no other gods before me”, as recorded by God here in this First Commandment upon which all subsequent Commandments are founded.

When God commands that there be “no other gods before me”, He is not even remotely suggesting that it’s just fine and peachy to have or allow other gods in the land, so long as they are not ahead of Him in line or above Him in status. No, that’s not what the language here conveys at all.

Its plain, crystal clear meaning is that there are to be no other gods in His sight within the land of His obedient people.

No other gods are to be tolerated, much less openly worshiped.

That’s that the God of Christianity has commanded on the subject.

(For those paying attention, this all ties in rather neatly with recent news out of Oklahoma regarding the desires of satanists to freely express their religion and publicly display monuments to their god ,which I covered earlier in Prancing Ponies, Bible Belt Satanists, and America’s Proud Rebellion.)

Now, back to Obama, Clinton, Clinton, Kerry & Company.

Obviously, they completely and openly reject this First Commandment.

Trouble is, so do modern American “conservative Christians”. For all the big, bold, prideful talk and bomb-throwing, the vast majority of professing evangelical Christians in America who are passionate about their “conservative” politics are just as opposed to the First Commandment as their liberal counterparts.

You think that George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, Ted Cruz, and [insert top tier “conservative” Republican here] are any more in favor of actually applying and obeying the First Commandment of God to man?

Not on your life! Political life, that is, which is the measure of all things for…politicians (and their politically engrossed followers).

By What Standard?

“It must be recognized that in any culture the source of law is the god of that society.” ~ R.J. Rushdoony

.

But is this secular understanding of reality any excuse for disobedience in supernaturally saved New Creatures in Christ? Is the world’s standard for what is “practical”, “doable” or “pragmatic” in the political realm (or any other) ever to become the embraced standards of true Believers when those secular standards stand in stark opposition to the crystal clear pronouncements lovingly conveyed in the perfect Word of God?

If Scripture is actually true, then it is the professing Christians embracing this secular, satanic spin on “conservatism” that are most to blame for our current state of affairs. Judgment begins with the people of God (1 Peter 4:17). It begins in the true Church. If repentance and true restoration are to come to this land, it can only come through the Church leading the way.

Put another way, to complain about Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton not honoring God and leading America into anti-Christian darkness while simultaneously dismissing the Word of God as the standard by which even even America is to approach the subject of “other gods” in the land is biblically incoherent and an affront to God.

Claiming His name while acting in such a manner only makes thing much, much worse.

Until and unless His people lead the way in repentance, we are and deserve to be a doomed culture. Until we repent of our idolatry and submit to God’s Word as the standard and source of life in all of His creation, we have nobody to blame above ourselves for the cultural carnage already piled up around us and the even greater carnage to come.

In this context, we’re well served to consider a very popular passage among professing Christians in America:

if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land. (2 Chronicles 7:14 – ESV – emphasis added)

This one’s so familiar ad so often recited that you may have seen it on a greeting card or a tee shirt and very probably in a Facebook post or Twitter feed.

But like so much else in America, the beautiful truth of this unbreakable promise has been morphed into a magic ticket to seek and gain the favor of a God before whom we will not humble ourselves. We will not repent. We will not obey.

And He better just deal with it and give us what we want anyway!

It is here that we must be reminded of the fact that God doesn’t need America. Not one little bit.

He doesn’t need you. He doesn’t need me.

He is God. He needs nothing, including America.

So get over yourself.

And get over America.

Pride easily defines and dooms both individuals and cultures until and unless the intervening grace of God inspires conviction, repentance, and restoration.

“If my people who are called by my name humble themselves…”

Well, will they?

In America?

While there is yet time?

That is my hope and prayer.

  1. Nowhere in the Bible are Christians told they have to participate in worldly politics. It does however tell Christians to be seperate from those who are reprobate according to Scripture. The Bible predicts a huge decline in godliness, it even predicts that most professing to be Christians will be following false doctrine. Trying to make America into a Biblically “Christian” country is attempting to be a “kingdom builder”, which is stupid and pointless. The world wont be Godly until the Rapture happens, THEN the 7 year Tribulation has to happen, AND THEN Christ makes a physical return to Earth for the millenial reign. If you try to skip those first two steps I mentioned, YOU are trying to complete something that is unbiblical. If youre a Christian, stay out of politics. Be seperate. The sooner the world goes down the drain, the sooner Christ’s return.

  2. America was never meant to be a theocracy, so why do you Christians keep trying to turn it into one? The First Amendment allows us to have the Freedom of Religion, which means that everyone is allowed to freely practice their religion here in America, no matter what that religion is. So are you really trying to say that the First Amendment should be done away with? Should us Americans really have one of our most basic, fundamental freedoms taken away from us simply because your holy book forbids that freedom?
