My fantabulous wife Holly and I just got the word a little while back that Baby Buss #4 is on the way.

[Insert shouts of joy and hallelujah choir music here.]

Which has me thanking God and thinking about a lotta things (including some of the interesting reactions from many in this dying culture who can’t completely – or even partially – understand how a someone could actually be thrilled to have four kiddos aged five and under), some of which I will try to share soon. In the meantime, let’s celebrate the moment together with some supernaturally supercool lightning-in-a-bottle from Psalms, shall we?

Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord,
    the fruit of the womb a reward.
Like arrows in the hand of a warrior
    are the children of one’s youth.
Blessed is the man
    who fills his quiver with them!
He shall not be put to shame
    when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.

~ Psalm 127:3-5

Blessed is everyone who fears the Lord,
    who walks in his ways!
You shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands;
    you shall be blessed, and it shall be well with you.

Your wife will be like a fruitful vine
    within your house;
your children will be like olive shoots
    around your table.
Behold, thus shall the man be blessed
    who fears the Lord.

Do most Americans believe these things?


Do most professing Christians in America believe these things.


Do most American Christians really view children as the blessing that Scripture describes them to be?

Not even close.

But there is a plus side to this. There is a silver lining.

Against the black backdrop provided by the postmodern culture of death in which we now live, and in which even most professing Christians enthusiastically swim, we have a great opportunity to shine by simple, clear contrast.

While others prioritize things like careers, nicer houses, more stuff, and better vacations, we can, by God’s grace, model the recognition and active prioritization of children as the superior blessings that they are.

How cool is that?!

So sing it with me now with feeling as though you not only believe it, but as though you really, truly, and actually love it…: “Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.”

  1. I have two grown daughters and my husband and I also believed in the sad state of affairs of only replacement children. Later in life I learned more and am very sad we didn’t have more children. I have taught my daughters the folly in not producing children, but on the other hand since the government of the United States is claiming our children as their own and demanding they be poisoned by vaccinations having children is a very scary ordeal. I hope someday my children will be able to have children and I hope to be around to help them be awesome mothers and I hope they will be able to keep their children as their own and that the government will not steal them away. I am very happy for you Scott and may the Lord bless you and yours.
